This is an amalgam-free practice and we only place white tooth-coloured fillings (composites) as recommended by the World Health Organization.
If you need a filling replaced or a cavity filled, our white filling materials can usually work for you and strengthen and enhance your tooth. Once fillings become very big, through decay and replacement of fillings, the tooth is weakened and starts to bend and flex, resulting in stress fractures developing internally in teeth. The common symptoms of a cusp fracture are sensitivity to cold and pain on biting hard things, often at angles.
Our dentists may suggest a ceramic crown (cap) for a heavily filled tooth, to prevent flexing and the development of a tooth fractures. The life expectancy of a white composite filling is 5 – 7 years compared to that of a crown can be 15-20 years .
If the fracture tracks internally then the nerve may become infected and the tooth may need root canal treatment or extraction. You would know this as there would be sensitivity to hot things and throbbing pain often at night.
